I think he supports abiding by the Constitution. There is a long history
of counting citizens and non-citizens in the US. The entire history. Including counting slaves and multiplying the sum by 3/5. Prior to 1860, Indians were basically not recognized as being part of the country. They resided in their own national entities. Beginning in 1860, Indians in the "general population" were counted, and beginning in 1900, all Indians were counted (reservations began being considered part of the country).
There are all kinds of non-political reasons to count everyone. I'm not sure I disagree with Faz about supporting an amendment to count citizens, but I by no means feel strongly about it. The way the census works is part and parcel of the culture of the US that, in spite of itself, assimilates immigrant populations like no other country ever has (let's remember - Indians were here first, and are not immigrants at all - you and I are. The Founders weren't looking to assimilate them. They were looking to overwhelm them with masses moving ever westward - and they often looked to import immigrants for the job). And that ability to assimilate is the nation's greatest strength, by far. That's a stark point of disagreement I have with many Trumpies.
Mostly I object to all the bullshit around this issue. The administration has not had a single moment of honesty about the reason for this change to a process as old as the country. I question whether immigration is a winner in the election for the repubs. It did not appear to be in 2018 (Trump's main fearmongering effort was about immigration, and I think it largely backfired on him), and I am equally unconvinced that's mostly why he won in 2016.
There is not a shred of actual evidence that a single dem hopes to import immigrants to increase the dem voting public. If we're talking about election rigging, there is irrefutable evidence that the repubs are the current chief practitioners (not the only practitioners, but the chief ones) of gerrymandering, so honestly, I doubt your claim resonates that well much beyond Trump pep rallies. Trumpies are sold on it. Not so much the rest of the country, far as I can see.
